200374 – Bamfield Forest Service Road
Dear Max:
Thank you for your e-mail of November 27, 2011, regarding maintenance of the Bamfield Forest Service Road.
As I am sure you are aware, there were a number of weather-related road closures throughout the South Coast region and Vancouver Island in late September, including the closure of Bamfield Forest Service Road at Kilometre 54 for a brief period. Ministry staff and Western Forest Products were notified of the September 27 closure by Joe Pearson, Chair of the Bamfield Road Safety Association, at 9:06 a.m. Western Forest Products dispatched staff and equipment and re-opened the road by 12:19 p.m. Crews were also dispatched to other affected locations along the route.
Please be assured the designation of the Bamfield Forest Service Road as a wilderness route is not under consideration and there are no plans to reduce the maintenance level of the road below current standards. That said, as the maintenance of forest service roads are overseen by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, I have taken the liberty of sharing your comments with my colleague, the Honourable Steve Thompson.
Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Operations Manager Johnathan Tillie. He can be reached in Nanaimo at 250 751-3287 or by e-mail Johnathan.Tillie@gov.bc.ca.
Thank you again for taking the time to write.
Sincerely,
Blair Lekstrom
Minister

From the Bamfield Road Association -0906 September 27: Bamfield Road is out at KM 54. Also Klanawa and Russo roads also have trees down or other trouble and are not passable. This leaves our communities with no way in or out even by back roads. When the guy turned around he saw and reported it to a grader operator… he was told that they would look into the areas tomorrow.
Larry Myres posted in Bamfield Community Emergency Program.
This is what your $200,000 plus grant to keep the road open for Bamfielders provides and now rumor has it that in in-camera negotiations are directed at designating the Bamfield access road as a wilderness road which will require an even lower level of maintenance. Small wonder dignitaries arrive by helicopter. Shame on you!
